Mini Game Review – Pokémon Dream Radar

As the Fall of Games continues some titles aren’t large, magnum opuses or chaotic multiplayer free for alls; but rather smaller parts of a larger whole – like Pokémon Dream Radar. In this game players become the new assistant to Professor Burnet, a scientist that studies both the dream and physical realities in the Pokémon universe. As such players, using experimental gear, search out ‘Dream Clouds’ that are from the dream reality and collect orbs from them for Doc B. Easy enough, but the added kink of this game is that Pokémon also somehow breach reality through the Dream Clouds as well – if discovered they’ll fight back. Now Pokémon Dream Radar is pretty much like Face Raiders: using the 3DS camera you scan the room you’re in and zap the object that coming at you. However in Dream Radar you also have to collect orbs from the dissipated clouds. Those orbs in turn can be used to upgrade your tech and get items that help deal with Pokémon. Speaking of which, Pokémon in Dream Radar are in the form of a ball of light (why, I don’t know). Once discovered it will start firing smaller energy ball at you, the only way to beat it is by witling it down a la Ghostbusters until you win. Surprisingly the Pokémon still can get away but you’ll get the items they were holding like revives and berries. Now here what’s makes Dream Radar worth the $4.00 at the Nintendo eShop. The items & Pokémon players captured can be transferred to the recently released Pokémon Black & White Version 2 games. Now I’m not saying it will give players an unfair advantage but the Pokémon captured on Dream Radar are quasi rare (mostly anyway) and can make the game easier in the beginning. So yeah those who are a planning to get Pokémon Black & White Version 2 should get this title just to have nice ahead start to the poke mania, but everyone else can look the other way.

You didn’t hear this from me, but! – Evil Ryu and Devil Kazuya may be coming to Street Fighter X Tekken… for free.

According to an unconfirmed source  received by hadoken.net, Capcom is intending to release the $20 character pack for the PlayStation 3 and X-Box 360 versions of Street Fighter X Tekken a month early to coincide with the release of the games PlayStation Vita release. The pack already contains Street Fighters, Cody, Guy, Blanka, Sakura, Elena and Dudley as well as Tekken characters, Lei, Christie, Lars, Alisa, Bryan and a Jack series robot (dubbed Jack-X). As an apology to fans who opposed their DLC decisions, rumor is that Evil Ryu and Devil Kazuya will also be added to the pack with no extra charge. Other things mentioned in the article includes PS3 exclusive characters, Mega Man and Pac-Man being released in July (in part due to them being on the X-Box disc anyway), several proposed balancing and glitch fixes, other new DLC including gems and costumes and the name of the alleged new Darkstalkers game, Darkstalkers 4: Vampire Resurrection.

Capcom, Street Fighter and Additional Content (DLC, Locked ODC, updates)

Hey, guys TrueBackLash here, before, I get started with the article, I want to let you know that Boss Bronze is running behind, but he’ll be back with fresh reviews in a couple of days.

So all this talk about locked content for this game has got me thinking. The Street Fighter series has always been like this. Y’know adding stuff to one game and expanding it over the course of weeks/months. It annoys the hell out of people, but the Street Fighter series would be nothing without it.

If we stuck with just Street Fighter II, each non-shoto would only have two special moves, no super moves, no extra colors, no unlocked bosses, no necessary buffs and nerfs for balancing and no 5 new characters. I personally can’t think of Street Fighter now w/o Dee Jay and T. Hawk, and I know most fans wouldn’t be w/o Cammy and Akuma. The series stops there without all that content.

What about the other Street Fighter games? I found out about Sawada in the console version of Street Fighter the Movie, do you think I would have if Capcom didn’t rework the horrid arcade version? What about Alpha and SFIII, would they be the same if Capcom didn’t update them? No cult classic in SFA3 with one fighting games best rosters and features? No arguably the best 2D fighting game of its time(maybe still) in 3rd Strike? Scary thought.

Point is, additional content is not a bad thing and Capcom needs to find a way to do it without angering the fans. Honestly, I just don’t see how. When SFII was adding, y’know, all the stuff in the second paragraph, there was no DLC yet so they had to make new game to do it. Fans were angry and it became the poster child for Capcom Sequel Stagnation. What’s that? THIS http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CapcomSequelStagnation.

When Street Fighter IV came out, some fans were mad because it relied to heavily on SFII characters, Capcom made a new game with 10 characters added and some buffs and nerfs for existing ones. Fans were angry because they didn’t do it on DLC, which the original game was incapable holding so much. Then they made a small upload for said game on DLC, featuring four more characters. Fans were angry for another update they had to pay for.

What is Street Fighter X Tekken but a big, fat, nerd rage - am I right?

With this game, Capcom made a game that can handle the DLC, then came Locked Disc-gate. Obviously, Capcom intended to cash in on the 12 characters and other misc. locked away. The probably did it to save money on making it true DLC and (maybe as a built in excuse/afterthought/intended side effect) it saves on hard drive space on the console. Obviously fans were angry, they had a gold bar in their gym locker but it was hidden in a small locker inside that locker and they don’t have the key for it even though they paid for the gym membership.

Of course the hackers gloating about their finds on YouTube didn’t help any. What Capcom did was lazy and stupid, but I really don’t think it was shady and unethical. If you do, that’s why you have local senators and congressmen (or like government for other countries) and tell them that you feel Capcom ripped you off.

As for additional content down the road, what then? What won’t make fans angry? New games of mostly same stuff and DLC (or Locked ODC) doesn’t seem to cut it. And while free DLC and hidden (not locked) characters from Capcom would be nice once in a while, don’t fool yourself into thinking they’re not a business.

New content carrier pigeons maybe? New content telegraphing? no. Got it, new content smoke signals, genius!

Oh, if you have any thoughts leave a comment below.

This just in (or not) – DC is free, DLC for DAII is not, arr…

Heroes an’ villains. Thar be a fascination wi’ both forces, an’ in comic books they’re super (sorry I couldn’t help myself)… But in Octobree they be free, well at least in DC Universe anyway. Playin’ follow th’ leader t’ many MMOs ou’ thar, they too become free-t’-play t’ th’ satisfaction o’ cheap skate players like myself. O’ course them still willin’ t’ pay $15 a moon will enjoy certain advantages o’er th’ “freemium” players. In th’ long run howerewhether ye pay or nay, this will definitely boost numbers fer th’ game an’ finally give swabbies on th’ fence a wee push in th’ starboard direction. On Dragon Age DLC news th’: ‘Mark o’ th’ Assassin’ story, startin’ Felicia Day, will go live on Octobree 11. This time around Hawke must help an elf assassin named Tallis reclaim ancient relic o’ some kind. How this will affect th’ overall story remains t’ be seen, but at least will give players a new challenge t’ overcome.

WTF/FTW – Mortal Kombat 4 Ending (Jax)

You know, sometimes I forgot exactly how far gaming has come since the 80’s. From simple pixel sprites that go up and down, deflecting a square ball to multimedia master pieces like Mass Effect – it is truly amazing. I remember when Super Mario 64 was the most advanced video game ever, now it’s just a nostalgic piece of history. And then there are games like Mortal Kombat 4. Since the DLC announcement of Freddy Kruger in the latest MK gore fest, True Backlash has been absorbing lore and info on the series ad nauseum. One day he showed the ‘Jax’ ending of MK4 – after laughing myself into submission I realized that at the time this was unbearably cool, but now it earns a place in my WTF/FTW segment. Like I said, it is truly amazing…

Armada’s Fighting Game coverage from the San Diego Comic Con

Hi, there True BackLash, back again. Man oh man, for a convention dedication to comic books and media related to comic books, the amount video game coverage at this year’s San Diego Comic Con is staggering. If I talked about it all, then Bronze would have nothing for him to cover and that would be just inconsiderate. Besides looking at some the coverage of the fighting games alone is more than enough to wet my appetite. Today, we take a look at the latest DLC character announcement for Mortal Kombat (9), preview a the latest installment in the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise as well as the highly anticipated Street Fighter X Tekken and reveal a once thought dead fighting game series that is hinted at resurrection.

Well enough with the banter, let’s get to it.

Mortal Kombat: Freddy Kruger announced a secret 4th DLC character

Seriously, this is no joke, the mass murdering, dream invading demon from the Nightmare on Elm Street film series is the final character of four added to Mortal Kombat (for those not keeping track, MK vets Rain and Kenshi as well as new Shao Khan minion, Skarlet, were the other three). While I have mixed feelings about his inclusion for various reasons, he’ll be right at home in the game. Kruger will be available to download for the PS3 and XBox 360 versions of the game on August 9th, 2011.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3: 1 new game + 12 new characters = forty more dollars (American)

Well just like Capcom replaced Street Fighter IV with Super Street Fighter IV instead of making DLC for the former, Capcom does it again replacing Marvel vs. Capcom 3:Fate of Two Worlds with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. On the bad side MvC3 classic becomes a tacky coaster, unless you can trade it in for credit at a video gaming store. Along with that that’s $40 extra needed to get the new characters and features. Eh, what can you do? The characters introduced for this recent installment are Strider Hiryu, Firebrand, Frank West, Phoenix Wright, Vergil, and Nemesis from the Capcom side and Iron Fist, Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, Nova, Dr. Strange and Rocket Raccoon from the Marvel side. Game’s set to drop November 15th, 2011.

Street Fighter X Tekken: A New Era of Combat is Here

A 2D game with crazy ki attacks vs a 3D game with attacks closer to real life? Hmmm, why didn’t I think of it? Anyway, Bronze did a piece on this game already, Characters introduced before SDCC were Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Cammy, Guile, Abel and Sagat from Street Fighter and Kazuya, Nina, Hwoarang, Marduk, King, Bob, and Julia from Tekken. Bronze also reported that Cole McGrath PS3 and PS Vita exclusive. Announced at SDCC were Street Fighter’s Dhalsim and Final Fight’s/Street Fighter’s Poison and Tekken’s Yoshimitsu and Steve Fox. It’s also implied that other Final Fighters Hugo, Cody, Guy and possibly Haggar will make it into the game as well. The game hits the shelves, March 2012.

Darkstalkers: IT’S ALIVE!!!!

For those who have waited for over 10 years for a proper sequel, it’s looks like it’s now time. Street Fighter producer, Yoshinori Ono stated that the Darkstalkers series is not dead during the Street Fighter X Tekken panel. G4TV.com takes it a step further and says that a game is being worked on. This is so nuts, I hope we see some progress soon. For the occasion I have the ending theme song for both the Darkstalkers anime and american cartoon series Trouble Man. Have a listen and enjoy.

Well that’s all I got folks, til’ next time, this is TBL saying take care, and get thumbs ready for combat.
